Why is the USA so backwards?

Now with the Washington State Supreme Court's decision today, the USA has solidified its role as a discriminatory, backwards nation. It is embarrassing to me as an American to realize how backwards the US really is, especially when compared to Western Europe. Supposedly it is the land of the free, but in reality it is quite the opposite. It is a nation where discrimination reigns and rational, itelligent thoughts are not permitted. Thanks, Washington State!

Matt is going to do a 1-yr Masters program in Amsterdam. We're both looking forward to being in the Netherlands. Who knows where we are going afterwards..

Amsterdam is said to be great... I have never been there, though. But there is more to the Netherlands than just clogs, tulips and windmills. Will the URL of your blog change when you move, btw...? Or will you keep things the way they are, despite not being in Düsselorf anymore?

that sounds like so much fun! I want to go do the masters program too!

I know it's backwards and that's why I've never been back to live.

Keep in mind that, relatively speaking, it is only a handful of people who are making the decisions that represent the United States. It is far from a "backwards" country, compared to most countries. And even compared to Western Europe, there are pros and cons for both civilizations.

Making a blanket statement about a defined group of people is only perpetuating discrimination and blind judgments in this world.

I agree that our country's leadership has taken us and the world down a very dark road in history, but this is just a reminder not to add fuel to an already-rampant fire of discrimination and judggment found in the psyches of the average people.

As an 11-year resident of WA State who just left for Germany in May... er... sorry. Not my fault :-( Really, I can't understand why they can't seem to let people just freaking get married. My two best friends are a gay couple & have been together for over 10 years (in WA), even own 2 houses jointly. You know, most people in WA (at least, Western WA, ... Seattle area) are sort of laid-back hippie types who are ok with whatever you mention. Or at least won't fight anything they disagree with, lol. In fact, even most of the Republicans are kind of, well, laid back hippie type Republicans, if there is such a thing (at least compared to scary Colorado ones, were I grew up). Sorry that a few jerks in WA have so much control...
