Smoking in Germany

If you are coming to Germany to visit or live, be aware that a lot of Germans smoke. I** am amazed every time I go out to eat and someone at the table next to me lights up a cigarette. It is disgusting. I should not have to eat while breathing in deadly cigarette smoke. When is the German government going to step up and ban smoking in public places? I miss California because you were not permitted to smoke even in a bar! It was great. Now I go home from even a restaurant and my clothes, skin, hair, etc stinks like smoke. If you are in Germany reading this blog, QUIT now. If you do not quit have the decency to not endanger others by smoking inside.

Here is a good reference for you:

**Disclaimer: I can make these statements because I used to smoke, but quit. If I can quit, any one can.

I've read in the past few months that Germans are reluctant to regulate themselves that much due to past bad experiences with such behaviors.

Of course I've complained about smoking in Germany before.

I'm happy they are stopping more and more in Switzerland. And of course Vancouver is smoke free so enjoy your visit next time here! I forget sometimes how nice it is not to have to think about ourselves. I'll give you one tip. If your clothes are smokey after returning, hang them over the heaters (assuming it's attached to the wall). The heat should help muster out 90% of the smell. Try it, it really works! Too bad your heat will be off for the summer soon though!

at my gym, during the winter, the employees are allowed to smoke inside right next to the cardio machines. They are in a separate room, but it opens on to the cardio floor so everytime someone goes in or comes out the cardio section is flooded with smoke.

I complained and they told me it was because it was too cold for people to smoke outside.

At a gym.

Right on, James! I saw this thing on the news today about how they are now going to refit all those awful cigaretter machines outside on the streets to take only bank cards with some special code on them assuring that the user is over 16. They claim it will reduce the number of teenagers smoking, when in fact the REAL agenda is to sell MORE cigarettes because people don't have to have the cash on them to buy them and can just use their bank card. Grrrrr!

I figure it's going to take at least another 5 years before Germany gets even remotely close to other countries that have banned smoking in public.

Ireland have banned smoking in public places, England & Wales nearly every public place, Scotland like Ireland.

In the UK, in the past, if a smoker was asked to put it out he was legaly bound to do so. Risk of a fine or being thrown out. Though not of much use since the ban ;) Anyone know if anything similar applies in Germany?

Now that some member countries are starting to reap the benefits. I wonder if they banned smoking how much would the health system improve?

Even the Spanish have introduced something, but not as drastic, thats another smoker's country... Germany's turn has to be coming soon!! I hope EU could get into the subject eventually, I doubt any local politian would raise to the challenge, too controversial. Easier to blame someone else on something unpopular that needs to be done ;)
