Ich finde Mexican Essen!

I know to those of you in North America, you're thinking, "Ok, James has lost his mind over there in Germany," but I have not had Mexican food since I left San Francisco on Friday, December 30th. It is my favorite food and I found a supermarket in Duesseldorf that sells Mexican food. I bought black beans, refried beans, jalapenos, chili seasoning mix, chips and salsa, corn and flour tortillas, and Tabasco sauce!! I know you can guess what we're having for dinner tonight. I even bought Kraft macaroni & cheese, Newman's salad dressing, veggie burger mix and microwave butter popcorn! I have been unwilling to buy ketchup because there are so many varities, but I just wanted plain Heinz ketchup and guess what? Yep, you guessed it: I bought some today! Now if I could just find a bar that makes a good margarita I will be all set. Bis spater...Oh yeah, I forgot to mention where I bought the Mexican food, just in case you're in Duesseldorf and want Mexican food too, it is in the lower level of Karstadt on Shadowstrasse.

Excellent! You can have a real Mexican feast. The Casa Fiesta Products are pretty good as are the ones from Fuego. I really like the mild salsa and the cheese dip. One of the supermarkets in our town carries Fuego stuff, but they don't have black beans or refried beans yet.

Ever since my husband tasted Heinz ketchup he's been hooked and it's the only kind we buy. Luckily it's available almost everywhere.

Happy eating!

Yeah, I have to go to Karstadt whenever I get to jonesing for Kraft Mac 'n Cheese. For most of my Mexican food needs I do what Christina does and buy the Fuego brand.

Tabasco and Heinz ketchup are sold everywhere. Don't buy them at Karstadt and pay ten prices for them. Check too at the bigger supermarket chains like Rewe, Real, Marktkauf, Kaufland, etc. for things like tortilla chips and salsas and chili con queso dips...many of the bigger chains carry them.

Oh. And try www.hello-food.de to get other foods from the US that you can't easily find in stores here. It's pricey but if you really want something, it's worth it.

Hmm hmm good @ Heinz. They make the best ketchup on the planet! Their mayonnaise is really good if you're into that. There's nothing like finding a piece of home (or what was sold at home) when you're living abroad.
Enjoy, pig out and congrats on your find!

Heinz ketchup has nothing on the chili type salsa ketchup you can find in Europe. I tried that for the first time and I was so hooked. The biggest problem is that I can't find it here yet and am so pissed and miss it. I think it is a Heinz brand and says something like hot or salsa on it. I'm not doing a search now or I'd probably have that answer. MAybe I'll just have to try and do a post on it tomorrow. :)

Oh and I'll say the same. I miss mexican food so much even here in Canada. I haven't had any in almost a full year now and I am really craving it too!

Please, I beg you, if you ever run into a store that sells Chef Boyardee Spaghtettio's, Ravioli, or Campbell's Chunky New England Clam Chowder, tell me?

I am very jealous right now...I love Mexican food too and cannot find refried beans in Strasbourg anywhere! I have made due with the French versions of Mexican food and it is pretty good, but I miss those refried beans :(

Adam, my cart kept growing larger and larger. When I finally checked out it was 76 Euros. I almost fell on the floor, but I bought the stuff any way because I was missing my Mexican food! I usually go to Aldi and it is soooo CHEAP!

As soon as I saw the photo I knew someone had dropped a bundle at the market! Germans so love their salty, sweet and fatty foods they have no room left on their palette for spice. They can't stand the heat. I was crushed when I went to a 'mexican' place here and got chips and salsa, and the chips were covered in paprika and the salsa was sugary ketchup with chopped onions.

I'm curious to hear your take on the Fuego stuff, did it satisfy the urge?

A tip: at most asian markets you can also get good cilantro and make your own salsa.

Megan: it did satisfy the urge. Not in the best way though. The chips were kindy grainy. The tortillas were rather dry and crumbly. I guess it will do for now, but it did cost a bundle....
